Weaned Calves

We Quiet Weaned all of our Red Poll calves today with the Heifers calves averaging just shy of 600 pounds and the Bull calves coming in at 670 pounds average. We weaned the steer calves a couple of weeks ago and they averaged 734 pounds.

Quiet Weaning entails putting a flap in the calves nose for five days while the calf stays with its mother. After five days the flap is removed and the calf is separated from its mother. At that point the calf is used to not drinking milk and he/she just goes about its day eating hay. When we quiet wean we also vaccinate the calves and weight them for our records. It is a very stress free period and the calves adjust well.

I should have the EPD numbers for this years calf crop within the next few days and then when time allows I will be putting together this years sale catalogue.

Peace River Forage Assoc. Pasture Walk

On June 19th we hosted the Peace River Forage Association and gave a tour of the cattle operation. Topics of discussion were the Rotational Grazing of the cattle during the summer, Winter Feeding on pasture to spread nutrients for increased production the following summer. Additional topics were Seeding Options in sod for increased production and Soil Fertility.

We took a walk to look at the new breaking land and the different forage varieties and seeding rates. And finally a inspection of the various watering systems especially the different solar options.

2025 Bull Sales

All our bulls for 2025 have been sold and at their new home, from Bonneyville area to the east and Caroline in middle Alberta, as far south as Princeton in the south Okanogan and Burns Lake to the west. And of course all the breeders here in the Peace River District in both British Columbia and Alberta.

An excellent year in sales with 31 bulls sold to 19 different breeders. We thank each and everyone and good luck calving next year. Healthy active calves, that is why we do what we do.

Next up will be heifer calves sales in the fall after weaning. Marsha will be sorting out the ones we will retain out of 30 or so. And I will be picking out the bull calves for developing out of 40 plus. Will have a good selection for next spring. Again thanks to all or our buyers that have supported us year after year.

Calving 2025

By the middle of April we were all done calving for the year, a lot more bull than heifer calves. A good selecti0on of AI calves that came mid February onwards and then the cow herd started calving March 5th and all done except 3 by the end of March.

Easiest calving season that we have had by far. We will thank the weather, the bulls and of course the cows for a trouble free season. Three sets of twins and 73 healthy calves.

28 young bulls on feed

We have a good selection of young bulls on feed this winter for sale in the spring after bull tests in April. Lots of light birth weight animals for use on heifers.

We feed up to two pounds of pellets in the cold weather plus good hay to keep their rate of gain around 2 pounds per day. This insures that they develop for breeding in the spring and are not carrying fat that will impact sperm production or make them lazy.

New Bloodlines

I spent the last week traveling down to Oklahoma and Kansas to pick up some new bloodlines. It was a long haul to get to Stieber Red Polls at Wellston, Oklahoma and then back up Wiese Farms in Haven, Kansas. In keeping with our overall direction of the farm these animals have lower birth weights and good milk production. They were tested before leaving the US but we still have them separated for the next three weeks for observation. We will be able to use these animals for the 2024 breeding season so expect bulls for sale from these guys spring of 2026.

Sale Catalogue 2023

New Site and the 2023 Catalogue

The current catalogue is available on the Catalogue tab. I try and keep what is still available on the Sales tab but if you are interested in a specific animal please call Marsha at 250-262-5638. Been working on getting the site updated and getting ready for calving. The heifers for sale are half gone to a couple of new breeders.
